DIAMONDS AND ME

Home Page ( click )

Twenty seven years ago I had the opportunity to buy 18 investment diamonds carefully selected  as to get different qualities, weights, colors, clarities and prices, which is always important in any kind of investment or collection.

I bought them at wholesale prices from a private collector who proved me it was a fine choice. He provided for me G I A ( Gemological Institute of America, worldwide known ) reports for each one and invited me to see them with a gemologist appraiser of my choice before buying.

They were in a safe in GENEVA at the time ( Switzerland ), I bought them and they are still there.

Of course, you may purchase diamonds not only for investment purposes or as a collector but for a quite special event in your life. In this occasion you may want to offer what are symbols of the most purity, sparkling, everlasting perfection all over the world : you may choose exceptional diamonds like Monarchies or V.I.P. during history, offering magnificent rings or necklaces.

And as well as for investment, collection or exceptional event, you have to be quite reassured about the quality of your choice.

The time has come for me to resell my diamonds and I think the  way I did this twenty four years ago is always the best way for a buyer who intends to realize a fine purchase, whatever his motivation is.

It is well known that, with the best interest of the whole profession in mind, the diamond market has been tightly controlled by DeBeers since more 100 years . This provides in the long run a quite certain increase in value and give protection under very few volume against all events because of the same international appraisal in all countries all over the world.

DIAMOND QUALITY  :  THE FOUR C’S

  < Home Page ( click here )

Diamonds prices appear with vastly different values which chiefly depend on precise factors worldwide admitted and provided by the Gemological Institute of America . The G. I. A. is a non- profit organization with no interest when you purchase a stone. G.I. A. is recognized all over the word as the reference.

H.R.D. laboratory in Antwerp and Gübelin in Lucerne deliver also worldwide certificates but you have to be aware there are a lot of other certificates that are not trustworthy or accurate or impartial, unfortunately, ( because it is their client’s interest ).

The quality and therefore value of a diamond chiefly depends on four factors or qualities called “ The Four C's “ : carat, color, clarity, cut.

CARAT

The diamond weight is always in carat ( 1 carat = 0, 20 g ) and for the same 3 other qualities, the diamond price-per-carat depends of the weight category following the approximate rules below :

·        $/carat price from 1, 5 carat to 1, 99 carat : about 1,18 x $/1 carat price.

·        $/carat price from 2 carats to 2,99 carats : about 1, 73 x $/1 carat price.

·        $/carat price from 3 carats to 3, 99 carats : about 2, 45 x $/1 carat price.

Example : The $/ carat  of a 3, 25 c stone is worth 2, 45 x $/ 1 carat price, i.e. if a 1 carat stone is worth $ 10.000, the same quality weighting 3, 25 c is worth :

$10.000 x 2, 45 x 3, 25 = $ 79.625.

COLOR

The color is very important to determine the overall beauty of a diamond and therefore its price.

The G. I. A color grading scale from D, E, F ( colorless ) to Z ( yellow ) is indicated in each G. I. A. report : the diamond whiteness allows the light to pass easily through the stone and disperses that beauty with more or less fire and brilliance for the observer.

It is difficult for a consumer to see the difference and you need a gemologist and a report to be quite certain of the color quality which has a great influence on the stone's price.

Always mentioned in reports : Fluorescence :  none, faint, weak, moderate   are good;   strong or very strong   to be avoided. Light blue fluorescence in some cases may be considered a bonus.

CLARITY

      Clarity indicates any flaws or inclusions  in a diamond and the range is between Flawless ( F ) or Internal Flawless ( I F ) through VVS1 ( very very small inclusions 1 ), VVS2 ( very very small inclusions 2 ), VS1 ( very small inclusions 1 ) …..and I1 and I2 ( Imperfect ).

      Clarity is always indicated in G. I. A. / H. R. D./Gübelin/ reports as you may see by clicking on G. I. A.

Without high magnification ( x 10 ) inclusions are often invisible and it depends also on their positions inside the stone: the fewer inclusions, the rarer the diamond will be and the higher the price.

CUT

The shape of a diamond means : round, marquise, pearl, oval, princess, emerald, heart. The round brilliant shape costs more.

When a gemologist or a jeweler talks about cut, he is referring to the quality of cutting i.e. good proportions or good make of and between % Depth and % Table because the diamond beauty and therefore its price depend on them.

The best proportions are given by International Diamond Council Grading as shown in the picture below :

Diamond with very good proportions (International Diamond Council Grading)      Crown : top part

    Pavilion : bottom part

    Girdle : junction between them

    Table : crown flat surface

Depth = crown + pavilion + girdle = Total height

    Culet : end of pavilion

The figures are all in comparison with stone diameter ( 100 )

Figures 30.7- 37.7 of crown are angles.

The % Depth must be between 58 and 64 % and % Table between 53 and 66% for very good proportions ( also called good make ).

Their exceptional optical characteristics allow diamonds to work like a light accumulator. The sparkle of the stone results from the fire and the brilliance working together : smaller tables exhibit more fire, larger tables exhibit more brilliance and some people prefer fire to brilliance and vice versa.

You have other less important characteristics to watch for in certificates :

-         Culet : pointed ( None ) to 1.9 % diameter ( small to very small is very good, 2.5 % diameter is good )

-         Girdle : thin to thick i.e. 0,5 to 3.0 % diameter is good and medium is perfect.

-         Polish : excellent, very good, good ( not below good otherwise the price-per- carat should be less )

-         Symmetry : excellent, very good, good ( not below good otherwise the price- per – carat should be less )
